Monaco academy graduates: where are they now, from Mbappé to the next generation?
Monaco’s academy reaches Real Madrid, PSG, Napoli and clubs far beyond those headline destinations. Our selection follows fifteen players: six are listed at Monaco, seven at other French clubs and two abroad. The careers behind those numbers are less straightforward than a transfer graphic might suggest.

Mbappé draws the eye. That is understandable, but it cannot tell the whole story of an academy. Alongside the World Cup winner, this selection includes established professionals, loan journeys and younger players still looking for their place. Ten clubs appear in the snapshot. Seven of the fifteen players are listed elsewhere in France: those careers deserve attention alongside the two overseas destinations. An academy also supplies the wider league system. That does not make every outcome equivalent. It prevents careers without an enormous transfer fee from disappearing from the discussion.
2018 is not when Badiashile left Monaco
The table places Benoît Badiashile’s youth years between 2016 and 2018. His Monaco story continued in the first team until his move to Chelsea in January 2023. That distinction changes how the chart should be read: a youth period ending can mark an internal promotion rather than a departure. Development then continues against senior forwards, with a different level of responsibility. Reducing the career to two academy years would remove the very stage in which the club helped turn a promising player into an established defender.
Akliouche: patience before the transfer
Maghnes Akliouche arrived from Torcy in 2017, made his senior debut in 2021 and joined PSG in August 2026. Nine years separate his arrival in the Principality from his departure. His pathway shows why development can require several transitional seasons after youth football. Talent does not immediately become a central figure in a first-team project. A player needs opportunities, a role within the side and continuity. The eventual transfer makes that work highly visible. It should not erase the stages that made the move possible.
A loan starts a chapter; it does not supply the verdict
Irvin Cardona spent 2017–2019 at Cercle Brugge. Edan Diop was loaned there for 2025/26. The same destination belongs to two different moments and two different careers. Antonin Cartillier, meanwhile, joined Brest on loan in February 2024. These moves offer a more useful perspective than simply dividing graduates into those who stay and those who leave. Their sporting value must be assessed through matches and the career that follows. The word “loan” alone cannot establish success, demotion or a permanent transfer.
Before the Diagonale, there were other pitches
Bondy for Mbappé, Torcy before Monaco for Akliouche and Mainvilliers for Pape Cabral all belong in the story. Cabral arrived in the Principality in 2022 after several years at Mainvilliers, signed professionally in February 2025 and reached the first team later that year. Monaco entered at a decisive point in an education already under way. Three selected players are linked to another institution mapped in our academy directory. That does not count every earlier football school: several are named in biographies without having their own HEXAGONE academy page.
The next question is the more revealing one
The six players listed at Monaco do not establish a retention rate. The fifteen names are not a complete intake, and squad membership does not tell us how many minutes someone plays. This dossier instead provides an auditable starting point: who passed through the club, when, and where the sources place them in the snapshot. Fourteen pathways have both year endpoints; Adrien Monfray’s remains undated. The next step is to follow cohorts and their actual exposure to first-team football. The interesting question is not simply who leaves an academy, but what place the game gives them afterwards.
What we counted
15 distinct identities, 15 youth spells and 10 destination clubs. 14 players have all biographical year endpoints filled in. The last count measures field completeness, not agreement between sources.
The selection combines documented Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 squads with selected international careers. It is not a complete intake. No minutes, market values, success rates or regulatory eligibility are inferred. Youth periods and destinations are not a list of direct transfers.
